World of Lists

This site will contain links to interesting lists which are hard to find in traditional (non-Web) sources. Lists may be objective fact or pure opinion, or something in between. (After all, opinions can also be facts.) This site has just been launched, so keep visiting as more material is coming soon.

Arts

The first of many lists to cover graphic arts, music, literature and other topics. Links so far include:

The World's Greatest Paintings. Who painted them, and where they are now, plus links to image files

Greatest Classical Composers and Their Works.

Greatest Top 40 Singles of the Pop/Rock Era. This list has certainly been done before, but this original list was culled from several opinion lists a long time ago and it's obsessively complete.

Most Pointless Cover Versions of All Time. A personal list - feel free to let us know what we didn't think of

Joe Sixpack's Favorite Brazilian Albums of All Time. Joe Sixpack knows about Brazilian music, whoever he is.

All-Time 100 Best Movies. From Time magazine, which churns out lists like this. There are a hundred versions of this list on the Web, so I'll look around for a better one. For a newer take, check out Top 101 Films of the Millennium.

Top 100 Books of All Time (fiction) as chosen by 100 noted writers from 54 countries. An OK effort, but not great.

100 Best Novels of the 20th Century. This one's from the Modern Library. The choices are obvious, but not bad, actually.

Business

EE Times' 60 Emerging Startups

History

Lists of historical figures and events, including:

Greatest Historical Figures (a list of 200 individuals throughout history whose positive contributions changed the world).

Persons of the Millennium and Great Figures of the Ancient World

The Greatest Americans of History

Ranking the U.S. Presidents

Plus: Fifty Decisive Battles of the World (based on a list by someone named Edward Shepherd Creasy).

Science

Top Science Stories of 2005. Several magazines do this every year, but Scientific American's is probably the best. A source that would summarize the last few years of science news would be nice but I haven't found one.

Gallery of Astronomy Images. The Hubble telescope has been a boost for science, but more important, it's a good source for cool images for your desktop. This is not exactly a list, but it's a popular site.

80 Astronomical Objects to Check Out With a Small Telescope.

Nobel Prize Winners. A list of Nobel laureates with biographical profiles

The Greatest Equations Ever. An article posted on PhysicsWeb.

Sports

Includes lists of:
The Greatest Baseball Players of All Time (a summary of published works on this subject, which has wasted a huge amount of time over the years)

Winningest NCAA Football Coaches (from cfbdatawarehouse.com)

Most Dominant Sports Franchises

Travel/Geography

A variety of personal lists on travel-related subjects including an updated Seven Wonders of the World, Scenic Drives of the U.S. (other versions include this one), and Great Towns of America, plus some tables of geographical facts from various sources:

Nations of the World. Every possible attribute of every country in the world, from the CIA's World Factbook.

The World's Largest Rivers

World's Largest Urban Areas

Largest Urban Areas - U.S.

Other

More lists coming soon, covering cars, fashion, health, and a lot of other topics.
